Chicken feed supplements for a backyard flock

Sep 21, 2026

A complete feed already covers protein, energy, calcium for layers, and a vitamin-mineral premix. A supplement is a small add-on: powder in the trough, powder in the drinker, or a protein treat. University of Georgia Extension is blunt that scratch is not a complete diet and that mixing extra grain into a balanced ration throws protein, vitamins, and minerals out of line (UGA Circular 954).

That is the job of this page: pick the add-on that matches the problem, keep the bag of complete feed as the base.

What a supplement is (and is not)

UGA lists the nutrients a chicken actually needs: energy, amino acids, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, B-vitamins, minerals for bone and eggshell, electrolytes, and water. Birds typically drink about twice what they eat, and they stop eating if they cannot drink (UGA C954).

A backyard “chicken supplement” does not replace that math. It fills a gap the keeper sees: loose droppings, heat, molt, dull feathers, or a chick that has never shared a hen’s gut flora.

Match the product to the job

Job Form Fresh Eggs Daily SKU Not this SKU
Daily gut and immune support in adult birds Powder in feed Poultry Probiotics Hydration+ (water, chicks/heat)
Heat, shipping, molt stress, chicks from day one Powder in water Hydration+ Adult feed probiotic as a chick formula
Minerals, prebiotics, yolk and shell support Powder in feed Coop Kelp A calcium-only product (this shop does not sell one)
Omega-3s, feathers, egg flavor Powder in feed Flock Flax Protein treats
B-vitamins, garlic, respiratory support Powder in feed Brewer’s Yeast with Garlic Complete feed
Extra protein, foraging Dried larvae treat Black Soldier Fly Complete feed

The Pioneer Chicks list flax, kelp, and probiotics among common natural add-ons for homestead flocks (8 Natural Supplements for Chickens). That list matches what Lisa Steele’s shop actually sells. It does not require a new calcium SKU.

How to use them without wrecking the ration

Follow the scoop on the bag. Top-dresses sit on complete feed. Hydration+ mixes into drinking water (one bag treats up to 64 gallons on the label). Black soldier fly larvae are a treat or a 1-cup mix into existing feed, not the whole diet.

UGA’s calcium warning still applies: layer feed can run 3.5-4.5% calcium, which is too high for young meat birds (UGA C954). Do not “fix” a wrong base feed with more powder.

Are chicken supplements the same as chicken feed?

No. Feed is the daily ration. A supplement is a small add-on in feed or water.

Do backyard hens need probiotics every day?

Many keepers use a feed probiotic as a daily top-dress for adults. Save a water electrolyte-probiotic mix for heat, moves, molt, or chicks. Follow the label.

Can I skip complete feed if I free-range?

No. Extension still wants a balanced ration. Treats and forage sit on top of that ration (UGA C954).
